For the first time in recent club history, Brewers FC defeated prior league champions Serbians. This historic moment occurred Sunday in a faraway, magical land, called Caledonia. After clearing customs at the Caledonian border the Brewers quickly took the pitch and cruised to an impressive 3-1 victory.
The game began with a hard fought first half in which neither team was able to capitalize on several scoring opportunities. Several outstanding saves by Brewers ace goalkeeper Nick Gundrum helped keep the score at zeroes.
Brewers broke the goal freeze with a red hot Peter Schreiber free kick shot that left the Caledonian goalie scratching his head. With a 1-0 lead and a lot of game remaining, sweeper Devin Macleod decided to make things more interesting by getting himself ejected with a red card. “I thought it would be more impressive if we beat these guys playing a man down…also, I was tired.” The Serbians responded to this “Macleodian Gauntlet Toss” by cranking up the pressure. The Brewers quickly fell into a seeming defensive shell.
Apparently no one informed scoring sensation Pete Schreiber of the new tactic, as he exploded for two more goals, off assists from Christian Shanower and Scott Marx respectively. The Serbians did try to get back in the game with a late goal, but veteran defender Eric Mbida, and one time MLS prospect laughed it off, “Once we got that third goal….hah…[unintelligible]…team of destiny.”
